Why do Dalits have the lowest qualification jobs among the other castes?
Human rights abuses against these people, known as Dalits, are legion. The term outcast has its roots in the caste system, a form of social stratification based entirely on a person's birth family. India's Untouchables are relegated to the lowest jobs, and live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated, paraded naked, beaten, and raped with impunity by upper-caste Hindus seeking to keep them in their place. Merely walking through an upper-caste neighborhood is a life-threatening offense. The “Untouchables” are literally outcastes. They are the fifth class, so unworthy it doesn’t even fall within the definitions of the Hindu caste system. Also called Dalits, members of this class are considered impure from birth and so perform jobs that are traditionally considered unclean or exceedingly menial, and for very little pay. Dalits often work as agriculture workers or manual scavengers, cleaning latrines and sewers by hand and clearing away dead animals. As you can see from the visual, Dalits are forced to do the lowest-paying jobs, e.g, sweeping the streets. They have no other choice other than this as otherwise, they cannot earn a living and there will be no one to feed their family and to get basic needs. The higher caste gets all the opportunity for the higher paid jobs and thus Dalits are left with these Dalits are considered as the lowest caste among any other caste and thus none of the other castes are interested in how Dalits lead their lives. They are selfish human beings who care for nobody except for themselves.
What is the visual trying to say?
The dalit is holding a broom and walking past all the signs which are showing all the needs and wants of a normal person. Basic necessities are included, such as housing, school, water, shelter and clothes etc. Being deprived to the extent of not having water shows how mistreated they are, they are not even treated as humans. If you deprived a human of the most basic need of survival, do you yourself even have humanity? The dalit is sweeping the floor as he takes a walk down the signs, implying no matter how hard he worked, those things on the signs will still be out of reach. They are portrayed like a simple stickman, just like how one would portray any other person. This shows how they are actually all the same, they are all human beings, but yet they are not being treated equally just because they were born into that particular caste. Having no education is the same as trapping them in the caste forever, with no education, they cannot get a job of a higher pay and improve their living conditions. They are oppressed by the rest of the people. They are born into the world with their life paved out for them, no matter how hard they try, they will never be able to change their fate, unless the ones around them make an effort to do so.
How are the dalits,’untouchables’ different from the touchables?
In the visual a dalit does not have access to the place of worship, the dalit is deprived from attending school, the dalit does not get basic necessity like water, the dalit does not have a proper roof over his head, the dalit does not have footwear protecting his feet, the dalit does not enjoy the luxury of owning jewelleries. The touchables will have access to the place where they can worship, the touchables can enlighten themselves by attending school, the touchables have access to clean water, the touchables have a place to stay, the touchables have shoes to protect their feet, the touchables have jewelleries to adorn themselves. This shows the difference between the marginalised cast and the others. While the rest of the higher cast go to temples and experience spiritual enlightenment while the dalits are not given the choice to worship.while the rest of the society attend schools and prepare themselves for the competitive society, the dalits continue to be not exposed to the society where they have a choice to do what they want. The touchables are sheltered and live in places where basic necessities can be found whereas the dalits are living in unfavourable conditions with no basic necessities where they can access. The touchables protect their feet from the dirt and sharp objects on the paths that they walk and have different kinds of footwear like heels, sports shoes, boots, slippers for different occasions and seasons of the year and change the footwear once it wears out but the dalits cannot afford basic footwear to prevent damage to the feet or change a few pairs in a year. The touchables have the luxury that will allow them to pamper themselves and treat themselves to expensive products while dalits do not experience this kind of treatment in their lives. These are only the some of the ways that dalits and touchables differ.
